6 August 2024My day begins with a stroll through the historic center, a maze of medieval streets resonating with history and charm. I let myself be guided by the beauty of the ancient facades and the welcoming squares, immersing myself in the unique atmosphere of this enchanted village. The scents wafting through the streets envelop me, inviting me to explore even more. The smell of freshly baked bread and the irresistible allure of the culinary delights emanating from the trattorias. My first stop is Piazza Silvestri, the bustling heart of the city, where I admire the historic 14th century fountain and lose myself among the vibrant colors of the local market. Here, among the stalls full of typical Umbrian products, I succumb to the gastronomic delicacies and artisanal products, savoring the authenticity and vitality of the village. I continue my exploration towards the Palazzo dei Consoli, an architectural masterpiece that towers majestically over the main square. I admire its imposing towers and decorated facades, allowing myself to be captivated by the history that permeates every corner of this ancient noble residence.
After a brief coffee break in a charming café along the main thoroughfare, I head towards the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, a jewel of Romanesque art that houses precious works of art and medieval frescoes. I recommend a visit to the ancient washhouse of the Accolta, near the fifteenth-century tower of the gate, known as the Molini. This artificial reservoir, formed by the damming of the Clitunno river, called "Accolta", serves to collect the waters which, by falling, drive the blades of the adjacent still-functioning wheat mill. A lady with whom I exchange a few words recommends a visit to the nearby Torre del Colle. I decide to conclude my visit with a short tour in this enchanting medieval village among the ancient walls and narrow cobbled streets, letting myself be transported back in time, admiring breathtaking views and savoring the authenticity of a place out of time.
Bevagna and Torre del Colle have stolen my heart, leaving me with precious memories and the burning desire to return for the Mercato delle Gaite, which I've been told transports Bevagna back in time to the Middle Ages, in a magical atmosphere, among flag-wavers, musicians, and artisan stalls that bring ancient crafts and traditions back to life.
