8 May 2024My first stop is the Basilica of San Francesco, a sacred place that exudes an aura of holiness and devotion. Upon entering, I am enveloped by the scents of incense and candles, which mingle in the air creating a mystical and evocative atmosphere. I admire the artworks of Giotto and Cimabue adorning the walls, allowing myself to be captivated by the beauty and spirituality they convey. I pause before the tomb of St. Francis, a place of prayer and reflection where I can feel his spiritual presence. I continue my journey to the Basilica of Santa Chiara, dedicated to the founder of the Order of the Poor Clares. Here, among the medieval frescoes and splendid stained glass windows, I experience the pleasure of contemplation. I sit for a moment in the gardens of the cloister, immersed in the silence and beauty of the flowers blooming around me, feeling a deep gratitude for the beauty of this place. I then decide to visit the Hermitage of the Carceri, a place immersed in wild nature, where St. Francis would retreat for prayer and meditation. I climb along the winding path leading to the hermitage, surrounded by the singing of birds and the scent of vegetation.
Finally, I do a visit to the Porziuncola, the small church inside the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where St. Francis founded the Franciscan Order. I enter the modest church, illuminated by the soft light of candles, and kneel before the altar, feeling a profound emotion and gratitude for the simplicity and spirituality of this sacred place. My day in Assisi ends with a stroll along the city walls, from where I can admire the breathtaking panorama of the Umbrian hills stretching to the horizon. I breathe in the fresh, clean air deeply and feel that my spirit has been rejuvenated by this unforgettable experience. Assisi is truly a magical place, where history, art, and spirituality merge in perfect harmony, leaving an indelible mark on the heart of anyone fortunate enough to visit.
